Slush 2014: VacantBoards Represents #MadeinLagos

By

Imagine a hub of tech start-ups around the globe, bustling, displaying and sharing ideas; a platform whereby voices are lent to transformative, world changing business ideas. Well, that’s what Slush brings to the table. Slush has been described as the focal point for Eurasian startups and technology talent to meet with top-tier international investors, executives and media.

Each year, the two-day event takes place in the wintery Scandinavia amidst one the most dynamic tech ecosystems in the world. What started as a local, 300-person event has grown to become one of the leading tech and startup events in the world, reaching 7000 attendees from 68 countries.

This year, VacantBoards was present at the event alongside other Nigerian start-ups such as Wecyclers and Truppr, each explaning how companies #MadeinLagos are using technology to change the game in outdoor advertising, recycling and fitness respectively.

Participants at the event visited the VacantBoards booth to find out how we were able to merge technology with Out-of-Home advertising in Nigeria. Tunji Alao, representing VacantBoards, explained how  the company enables one-click nationwide booking of outdoor advert spaces through an efficient inventory. This innovative idea disrupts the negative image of Nigeria in the global scene as a country noted for fraudulent practices and other social ills. Rather the companies depict Nigeria as a country with lots of business potentials and investment prospects, especially in outdoor advertising.

Also some Finland based startups founded or co-founded by Nigerians such as Irofit, Internly and ClipMe. The 2-day event took place from Nov 18th-19th 2014 in Helsinki Finland. The highlight of this year’s event was Nokia’s re-entry into the computer hardware with its android tablet.

Slush is a non-profit event organized by a community of first-time entrepreneurs, students and professional music festival organizers, while backed by founders of Nordic success stories such as MySQL, Rovio, Supercell and Skype.

Technology has revamped the global scene, transforming the way things are being done in almost every sector from business, entertainment and politics to communication and life-style. Start-up companies, all over the world, are leveraging on the power of technology to develop innovative ideas to ease the modus operandi in various sectors. Slush gives these companies an opportunity to grow  by connecting them with possible investors.
