Eminent Nigerians and stakeholders in the Outdoor Advertising Industry in Nigeria converged at the Grand Ball room of Eko Hotel & Suites on Thursday May 15, to celebrate creativity and reward excellence as the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) held its 8th Exhibition and Poster Awards. The prestigious Poster Award of Excellence was organized as a way of promoting and encouraging creativity and professionalism in the Out-Of-Home (OOH) industry in Nigeria.
The event witnessed the presence of prominent Nigerians and stakeholders in the Outdoor Advertising industry as well as leaders of top Outdoor Advertising Agencies in Nigeria such as The Managing Director of Lagos State Advertisement and Signage Agency Mr. George Noah, MD Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) Mr Lolu Akinwunmi, Federation Europeen Publicite Exterieur (FEPE) International president represented by Mr. Mark Flys, Chairman of OAAN Mr Kole Ademulegun, 2nd President Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) Mr Lampe Omoyele, Chairman Senate Committee on Information Sen. Eyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman House Committee on Information and National Orientation Hon. Jibril Umar Buba and other dignitaries.
Giving his welcome address, Mr Charles Chijide, President of the Association, stated that the Outdoor Advertising industry has contributed immensely to the Nigerian economy by providing employment for over 30,000 Nigerians. He also said that the huge taxes paid to the state government are a mark of the significant contribution made by the industry to the government.
However, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s over-regulation and multiple taxation of the industry, stating that it is gradually killing the industry as Advertisers now search for other media platforms to patronize due to the high cost of Outdoor Advertising in Nigeria.
In response to Mr. Chijide’s claim, Chairman of the occasion, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, stated that the Senate Committee on Information is working earnestly to protect the interest of stakeholders in the industry, ensure that they have the right to free association and also enact a legal frame work where all stake-holders can operate freely within their own space.
Mr Chijide further reiterated the commitment of OAAN as a member of FEPE International, stating that the association will continue to operate under the highest ethical standards and will never relent in its commitment to maintain a high level of professionalism marked by acceptable ethical standards and global best practices.
Several brands were distinguished and appreciated by OAAN for their outstanding advert copies. There were 9 entries for the award categories. Nigerian Breweries and Rotapanel clinched the Grand Poster awards for their outstanding contribution to the Outdoor Advertising industry over the years. Nigerian Breweries has been operating in the Out-Of-Home landscape since 1949 and has recorded a landmark in the industry with its various brands. Its maiden brand STAR lager beer, which was launched in June 1949, won the Grand Poster award for the company.
However, there was no winner for the public service sector category. Head of the Judging Panel, Mr. Lampe Omoyele, attributed this to the fact that there was only one entry for this category and the nominee couldn’t score enough minimum points based on the criteria. Winners of the other categories include:
||Loya Milk Calcium|
||Star Shine on|
|LG Smart 3D|
||Fidelity one card|
||Fanta (Snack time)|
||Swift 4G LTE|
|GRAND POSTER AWARD||Star Larger beer|
The host of the awards, Bash the comedian, lit up the entire atmosphere with his rib-cracking jokes ensuring that there was never a dull moment. The guests were also treated to amazing dance and musical performances by various troupes, one of which was the Afrocentric dance crew.
The first ever Poster Award was organized in April, 1997 under the administration of Mr. Babu Akinbobola who came up with the idea of creating a platform to celebrate creativity and reward excellence in Outdoor Advertising. This idea gave birth to a 7-member committee saddled with the responsibility of organizing the maiden edition of the Poster Awards. The inaugural Poster Awards was the first to be endorsed by the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) under the leadership of advertising doyen Pa Moemeka.
From the first Poster Awards in 1997, OAAN moved on to the second in 1998 and the categories increased from 6 to 16. This year’s Poster Awards marked the 8th edition of this initiative. President of the association, Mr. Charles Chijide said that plans are in motion to make the awards ceremony an annual event. He mentioned that next year’s edition will take place on the 14th of May. We look forward to a better and more rewarding ceremony next year.
