In respect to the upcoming 2015 general elections, Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) is set to organize a stakeholder’s meeting involving all registered political parties, on the 7th of November, 2014 at Planet One Entertainment Center, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement issued by LASAA, the purpose of the meeting is to sensitize members of the various political parties on the guidelines and modes of operation in the use of outdoor advertising for political campaigns in Lagos state, in preparation for the upcoming general elections.
LASAA’s Managing Director, Mr. George Noah, said the move is necessary to checkmate indiscriminate use of campaign posters and banners in the state adding that that the parley would seek to ensure that the use of campaign posters and banners is done with proper consideration for the environment and in compliance with existing laws.
Noah also highlighted some challenges faced by the agency’s enforcement team, in its bid to rid Lagos of the visual blights posed by indiscriminate use outdoor political campaign materials. He stated that some of the officials are being “attacked and harassed daily whenever they set out to discharge their statutory duties across the state” adding that despite repeated appeals and warnings, there seems to be no end to the act rather it is on the increase.
Speaking further he said “We wish to restate our commitment to our earlier directive to the effect that posters will not be allowed within unauthorized places. These are: high streets, highways, major roads, loops bridges, pillars and triangulars.
“Posters are only allowed within designated zones namely: walls of public schools, public hospitals and stadia. The guidelines published by the agency before the last general elections of April 2011 still subsists. We wish to re-emphasize our preparedness to collaborate with all political parties, politicians, campaigners and supporters in achieving a smooth electoral exercise’’. It is hoped that the meeting would result in a hitch free outdoor campaign for the forthcoming elections.
As indicated in my previous post, the use outdoor advertising for political campaigns has begun within the state, as well as other parts of the country. With the upcoming elections, it will not be surprising to see various posters and political campaign materials all over the place.
This event organized by LASAA is very timely, as politicians need to be aware of how to effectively use outdoor advertising for their political aspirations and not cluster the streets with campaign materials.
